The angle of late afternoon light across a clear blue sky somehow rendered invisible the usual criss-cross of jet trails above our area. It was eerily free of any human mark in every direction, something I’ve only experienced once or twice here in twenty years.

A few minutes later, the sun dipped behind the mountains, the rays reflected higher, and the tic-tac-toe of passing jets reappeared.
